Dumped PC-BSD, installed Fedora Core 7

Even more slick and smooth, it recognized my sata dvd drive off the bat, and is not jumpy and buggy. Pulled my exact nVidia card and sound drivers. Did a standard workstation install, got 106 updates (felt like xp :) except they went really fast).

So far so good.

Installed UT2k4, but it didn't seem to run - I guess I forgot it needs the Play CD until you patch it. Went out and got the latest patch. Best I can figure out how to install it is to just copy it over the existing files.

Right or wrong?

{2399}Straycat 07-06-2007 07:25 AM

Right. I have a patch that EXE's itself if intrested.

www.astraycat.com/UT2004.exe

Also, anyone ever heard of the Frag-Ops MOD for 2004?

hoser 07-06-2007 07:28 AM

Please, translate :)

EXE... linux, I no comprende!

{2399}Straycat 07-06-2007 07:30 AM

ohmy, sorry Tom.

<===== Idiot:(

hoser 07-06-2007 08:00 AM

LOL, all good man, I appreciate the offer anyway :)

*Xx~Vlad~xX* 07-06-2007 09:18 AM

I've been using FC since version 1. I've always like it :D SuSE is good stuff too.

There's a nix UT2004 Patch here:
http://www.linuxhardware.org/article.../08/31/1430232

Also, linuxquestions.org is a really good site for linux problems and other questions you might have about FC or any other distro being used. :)

hoser 07-06-2007 10:47 AM

After installing the game never did fire up, I saw the splash screen and that was it, so I figured it was because the play cd wasn't in. After putting it in, I saw the same result so I figured I'd just patch it. PS it still didn't fire up, even after trying the amd 4 binaries.

Vlad, I found the same person elsewhere, with related info. After reading it again, I see I didn't install the Editors Choice Edition Content before patching. I'm going to reinstall the game then install the Editors Choice, then patch it before running it.

Question, since the game is not platform dependent, can you theoretically just copy over a working ut2004 windows folder and run it from that?
I believe I read that somewhere, and that you just need to make a serial number text file for it to refer to.

---------------
Q: Where can I find the 3369.2 patch?
A: You can download it right here from icculus.org. Make sure to install the patch AFTER you install the Editor's Choice Edition content (see below under "Mods"). Please note that AMD64 binaries are included in the patch. Just rename ucc-bin-linux-amd64 to ucc-bin and ut2004-bin-linux-amd64 to ut2004-bin and you're good to go.
Q: How do I install the patch?
A: It's pretty easy. Just use these commands:
tar xfvj ut2004-lnxpatch3369.tar.bz2
cd UT2004-Patch
cp -R * /where/i/installed/ut2004

I'm not sure.....it has been a long time since I ran UT on a nix box. It was UT2003 on RedHat 7.2 last time I tried it.

I don't think the Windows folder copy will work on the Linux kernel since the Windows (C:\Unreal Tournament\System) has ".exe" executables for win32, where as, the linux executables are normally ".sh" or no extension w/ a chmod of 755 (RedHat highlights executable files in green).

The game itself is written in a hybrid of C, which Linux is built around. They way the game is called in the linux version should be ".sh" and not ".exe" if that makes any sense?? That was the way it was done in UT2003. I wonder if unrealadmin.org has any info? I'll see if I can dig it up.

Been using Fedora Core since version 3.

hoser 07-06-2007 12:50 PM

I've been on again off again since RH 5 (way before Fedora was ever thought of) if you can imagine, and before that tried a few Slackware runs.

My short attention span to linux has never allowed me to really get a firm hold on the OS, but I have enough know-how to as they say, be dangerous.

Vlad, what I didn't type but meant was that I was thinking I could replace the executables with the .sh binaries. I think I'll just reinstall, install the Editor's Choice crap, then the patch. Then I'll just copy over all the maps, etc.. and my user ini.

We'll see how it goes.

andyofne 07-06-2007 12:55 PM

Linux UT2004 is a strange animal, Tom. You need to install it a Linux installer.

It creates a directory in your home directory called /.loki and sticks a shit load of files in there.

That's what makes it goofy when running a server, you have to use a special option so it will read the server.ini and user.ini files from the 'installed' location instead of the user's home directory.

I screwed my server install up last night while we were talking... I know I had it running around Xmas time but I screwed up a bunch of files and now I'm going to reinstall it this weekend.

Oh I see what you meant...

After reading Andy's post, I would run the nix installer. I know the Win version of UT installs everything easily into one directory. The nix probably has several files installed into other dirs that aren't easily found.

I think I'm going to load up FC on an 80G Im not using now that I'm interested in this again....lol

hoser 07-06-2007 01:22 PM

Go for it :)

I didn't start using Fedora Core until they stopped making the free Redhat Linux. Now its just the enterprise version; so I started using Fedora Core.

Like you though, I have yet to ditch Windows completely. I do load Linux on older computers though and play with it all the time.

*Xx~Vlad~xX* 07-06-2007 11:50 PM

Just use a Torrent to get the file, it'll be the fastest.

THANKS. :D

andyofne 07-07-2007 12:16 PM

Well, perhaps the 'upgrade' path might not have been the best move.

I've got to work on my web server now, it won't come up because they've changed a lot of the apache modules and, apparently, my old httpd.conf file is invalid now.

*Xx~Vlad~xX* 07-07-2007 12:32 PM

Yeah, I remember upgrading from FC1 to FC3. The chroot environment had changed and "broke" some services that had to be fixed..:(

If you do use Torrent's to get the CDs, be sure you SHARE them for a little while atleast, if you can't share them 24/7.

I share mine 24/7, but only like 5 KB/sec upload speed is all I allow it.

Thanks for sharing. I don't.

yeah I left it run all day yesterday.

hoser 07-08-2007 10:52 AM

Apparently got some better instructions to follow from the fedora forums.

Install UT2k4
Install this patch -
http://dodownload.filefront.com/4489...f47edf063be630
Which includes the 3369, megapack, and editors choice files.
THEN run the game :)

I'll try it lata today.

*Xx~Vlad~xX* 07-09-2007 10:09 AM

I'll have to postpone my Lx build until this weekend, then I'll give it a shot. I havn't played 2k4 in years.

D_A_M_A_G_E 07-09-2007 05:31 PM

fedora hangs at keyboard selection lmao maybe it doesn`t like usb keyboards?

hoser 07-09-2007 09:26 PM

I installed with no special options, using a USB Kb & mouse, and did it from my sata dvd drive.

D_A_M_A_G_E 07-10-2007 05:54 PM

Text install shows it hang wilst trying to figure out what to do with my video card 8800gtx going to see if it compatible at all or not :D

hoser 07-12-2007 10:31 PM

Got it working. BLAH

Off to try Teamspeak bitches.... I'll be playing this weekend for sure :)

You sure you can make teamspeak work lol?

hoser 07-13-2007 10:20 PM

Hell no I'm not sure, I've read 100 post about TS not working with 2k4 on Linux, and 100 others that it works fine. Time to check it out I guess.

D_A_M_A_G_E 07-15-2007 07:59 PM

Lol Good luck maybe you`ll get lucky.

hoser 07-15-2007 08:13 PM

TS works, although I have no "in game" sounds or music. Odd but hopefully repairable. There was no game sound before so I know the TS didn't break it.

Using a logitech usb headset with mic.. sounds crystal clear on ts :)

D_A_M_A_G_E 07-16-2007 07:12 PM

Wonder if ventrilo works well I like it better than teamspeak.

hoser 07-16-2007 07:34 PM

Go for it man :) The clan I'm in uses teamspeak, so thats good enough for me. PS, I didn't have to configure crap, it just 'worked'.

On Fedora 7, I open console and type /bin/./ts and blammo, there is it :)

I'd like to get the game sound working too, but it's not a hugh priority. I'll look at that lata.
