To listen to some people you would get the impression that the world started when they were born. If the storm is the worst one they've ever seen or heard about then it must be the worst in history.
Also....
As Lothar pointed out, The more densly populated the world becomes, the more often and more numbers of people are likely to be in the path of tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, tidal waves and any other natural disaster you can come up with. It's just common sense.
