Dumped PC-BSD, installed Fedora Core 7

Even more slick and smooth, it recognized my sata dvd drive off the bat, and is not jumpy and buggy. Pulled my exact nVidia card and sound drivers. Did a standard workstation install, got 106 updates (felt like xp except they went really fast).

So far so good.

Installed UT2k4, but it didn't seem to run - I guess I forgot it needs the Play CD until you patch it. Went out and got the latest patch. Best I can figure out how to install it is to just copy it over the existing files.

Right or wrong?

I've been using FC since version 1. I've always like it SuSE is good stuff too.

There's a nix UT2004 Patch here:
http://www.linuxhardware.org/article.../08/31/1430232

Also, linuxquestions.org is a really good site for linux problems and other questions you might have about FC or any other distro being used.

After installing the game never did fire up, I saw the splash screen and that was it, so I figured it was because the play cd wasn't in. After putting it in, I saw the same result so I figured I'd just patch it. PS it still didn't fire up, even after trying the amd 4 binaries.

Vlad, I found the same person elsewhere, with related info. After reading it again, I see I didn't install the Editors Choice Edition Content before patching. I'm going to reinstall the game then install the Editors Choice, then patch it before running it.

Question, since the game is not platform dependent, can you theoretically just copy over a working ut2004 windows folder and run it from that?
I believe I read that somewhere, and that you just need to make a serial number text file for it to refer to.

---------------
Q: Where can I find the 3369.2 patch?
A: You can download it right here from icculus.org. Make sure to install the patch AFTER you install the Editor's Choice Edition content (see below under "Mods"). Please note that AMD64 binaries are included in the patch. Just rename ucc-bin-linux-amd64 to ucc-bin and ut2004-bin-linux-amd64 to ut2004-bin and you're good to go.
Q: How do I install the patch?
A: It's pretty easy. Just use these commands:
tar xfvj ut2004-lnxpatch3369.tar.bz2
cd UT2004-Patch
cp -R * /where/i/installed/ut2004

I'm not sure.....it has been a long time since I ran UT on a nix box. It was UT2003 on RedHat 7.2 last time I tried it.

I don't think the Windows folder copy will work on the Linux kernel since the Windows (C:\Unreal Tournament\System) has ".exe" executables for win32, where as, the linux executables are normally ".sh" or no extension w/ a chmod of 755 (RedHat highlights executable files in green).

The game itself is written in a hybrid of C, which Linux is built around. They way the game is called in the linux version should be ".sh" and not ".exe" if that makes any sense?? That was the way it was done in UT2003. I wonder if unrealadmin.org has any info? I'll see if I can dig it up.

Here's some Patch Info for UT2004 on Linux

I've been on again off again since RH 5 (way before Fedora was ever thought of) if you can imagine, and before that tried a few Slackware runs.

My short attention span to linux has never allowed me to really get a firm hold on the OS, but I have enough know-how to as they say, be dangerous.

Vlad, what I didn't type but meant was that I was thinking I could replace the executables with the .sh binaries. I think I'll just reinstall, install the Editor's Choice crap, then the patch. Then I'll just copy over all the maps, etc.. and my user ini.

We'll see how it goes.
